There is duʿāʾ al-ʿibādah (the supplication of worship) and duʿāʾ al-masʾalah (the supplication of request). In the Qurʾān, duʿāʾ is sometimes intended to mean this and sometimes that, and sometimes both of them together; and they are inseparably connected.

For duʿāʾ al-masʾalah is seeking that which benefits the supplicant and seeking the removal of that which harms him and its repelling. And everyone who possesses harm and benefit is the one who is worshipped; it is necessary that he be the possessor of benefit and harm. For this reason, He condemned those who worshipped besides Him that which possesses neither harm nor benefit.

And this occurs frequently in the Qurʾān, such as His statement: ‘And do not call upon besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you.’ [Yūnus 10:106] And He said: ‘And they worship other than Allāh that which neither harms them nor benefits them.’ [Yūnus 10:18]

Thus He, negated from these objects of worship both limited and transitive harm and benefit. They possess neither for themselves nor for their worshippers.

And this occurs frequently in the Qurʾān. He clarifies that the one who is worshipped must necessarily be the possessor of benefit and harm. So he calls upon him for benefit and harm with duʿāʾ al-masʾalah, and he calls upon him in fear and hope with duʿāʾ al-ʿibādah. Thus it is known that the two types are inseparably connected. Every duʿāʾ al-ʿibādah necessarily entails duʿāʾ al-masʾalah, and every duʿāʾ al-masʾalah contains duʿāʾ al-ʿibādah.
